Berries galore – at last, and cherries
Our superbly flavoured loganberries, tayberries and silvanberries have finally ripened.
The cool spring has greatly delayed ripening but has ensured the fruit is large, very tasty and easy to pick.
As well, these fruits should be abundant well into January. We expect cherries to be similarly delayed.
Strawberries
The crop is good and the present flowering should provide fruit for Christmas. Our price: $7.50 per kg.
Loganberries, tayberries and Silvanberries
These are now ripe and very easy to pick. Our boysenberry crop which is our best ever, will start around December 10. Our price for these is also $7.50 per kg.
Cherries
The first variety is the dark red Supreme.
However, the crop is very light and is expected to be picked out early.
Our pink Vega variety will be the main crop in mid-December and the first of the dark red varieties should be available Christmas week.

Welcome to spring at Sorell Fruit Farm
It is not an early spring but we are opening early to allow you to appreciate this year’s glorious blossoms.
So on Sunday, September 23, we open for our second Cherry Blossom Fiesta, which will run until October 14.
The fruit tree blossom has been especially spectacular this year because of the many frosty nights in June.
We started with a good early peach blossom in the end of July and this was followed by apricot blossom in August and then especially large and highly coloured peach and nectarine flowers early this month.
Now it is cherry blossom time.
Our chef, Sarah Woodward, has just returned from the winter in Queensland and promises some very special dishes, including:
- ricotta cherry cheesecake,
- cherry friands,
- buttermilk piklets with a compote of diced cherries, raspberries, baked almond and cherry liqueur, served with cream
- Chicken in cherry liqueur with currant jus, served with rice and greens.
While you are here check out the progress with this year’s fruit crops with the first strawberries expected about mid-October.
Also check out our many new fruit vinegars, chutneys and jams.
The farm hours are 8.30 am to 5.00 pm, every day of the week.

Cherry Blossom Festival

Capture that rejuvenating spring feeling with our Cherry Blossom Festival at Sorell Fruit Farm.
The fun starts with the first day of our new season on Sunday, September 23.
We have had a cold winter with many frosts and as a result we expect a spectacular display of cherry blossom from late September until mid October. There will also be cascades of apple blossom.
The café and gift shop will be open, and there will be free tasting of our fruit liqueurs and jams.
The garden deck with its surrounding roses, lavender and much more will be just the place to relax and rejuvenate with a great cup of coffee and one of the special cherry delights from the kitchen.
The first strawberries of the season will be available for picking around October 20. Cherries will be ripe for picking in December and January.

Making our wines

Enjoy the exotic flavours of our wines and liqueurs. Thornlea Wines is the name given to the wines and liqueurs made from the fruits grown at Sorell Fruit Farm, plus some fruit drawn from other Tasmania fruit farms that also produce fruit with high flavour levels.
Our winemaker is Peter Green who owns Mountain View Meadery.
The prime aim of Thornlea Wines is to produce wines and liqueurs that capture the unique flavours of the freshly picked, fully ripe fruit.
At the same time these wines and liqueurs must have all the additional characteristics of good wines and liqueurs.
To best capture the taste of freshly picked fruits some of the sweetness of fresh fruit is retained. Accordingly the wines and liqueurs are semi sweet.
We hope the purchasers of our products will be proud to take them home and share them with friends as examples of the unique flavours of our freshly picked, Tasmanian fruits.

Pick your own
Pick your own — or join one of our informative tours
Come to Sorell Fruit Farm to pick fruit fresh from the trees or bushes. There is nothing like the delicious taste of naturally, sun ripened fruit.
And we like our fruit to be pesticide free whenever possible.
There are many surprises at Sorell Fruit Farm.
For a start we claim to have the widest variety of temperate fruits available in any ‘Pick Your Own’ in Tasmania.
All fruit is easily picked and picking containers are available if needed. For those who do not wish to pick fruit picked fruit is always available.
A highlight of our fruit season is the cherry picking. When the branches are laden down with cherries they are a sight to see and the taste is exquisite.
The trees are specially pruned so that customers can pick from the ground. A very tasty and unforgettable experience!
